The Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat reports that terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip are reportedly considering relocating hostages to Gaza City in an effort to link their fate to Israel’s upcoming military actions. Israeli officials, however, dismiss the report as propaganda aimed at stirring opposition to a Gaza incursion.
According to the report published Sunday, Gaza-based terror groups are debating moving hostages into Gaza City to tie them directly to Israel’s plans to capture the city.
Sources within these organizations told Asharq Al-Awsat that although the plan is highly risky, it is under discussion at senior levels both inside and outside Gaza. “The goal is to increase pressure on Israel and link the fate of the living hostages to Netanyahu’s decisions,” the report noted.
Until now, the primary focus had been on preserving the hostages’ lives to use them as leverage in prisoner swaps or to negotiate a ceasefire.
However, in light of recent developments on the ground, a policy shift is reportedly being considered in which the hostages’ lives would be directly connected to the fate of Gaza residents.
The sources said this approach had not been applied in previously occupied areas, describing the “current plan for Gaza City as the most dangerous of all.”
Israeli officials assess that the newspaper report is likely a Hamas propaganda effort designed to provoke Israeli public opposition to any operation in Gaza and to create political pressure on the government.
