Hamas terrorists have expressed disappointment with the latest U.S.-backed proposal for a hostage deal, citing the absence of a guaranteed path from a temporary truce to a permanent ceasefire.
According to a source familiar with the negotiations, the plan, put forth by U.S. Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff, calls for a 60-day ceasefire period during which both sides would negotiate a longer-term agreement. However, the proposal does not include provisions for automatically extending the temporary truce if talks continue beyond the initial 60 days.
This omission has raised concerns for Hamas, especially after a similar situation in January, when fighting resumed after a previous truce expired and no further negotiations were pursued by Israel.
Although Hamas has not formally rejected the Witkoff plan, the group has communicated its dissatisfaction to mediators. It confirmed receiving the proposal only recently.
