Gazans told Reuters today that Hamas has tightened its control since last month’s ceasefire, adding to doubts that it will give up authority and diarm as promised.
After Israel pulled back from certain areas, Hamas quickly reasserted its rule and killed dozens of Palestinians it accused of collaborating with Israel or committing other crimes, even as foreign powers insist the group disarm and exit government.
Residents say Hamas is now monitoring goods entering its areas, fining merchants, and allegedly levying fees on items like cigarettes and fuel, while the U.S. warns these actions show “why Hamas cannot and will not govern in Gaza” under the Trump plan.
