Harvard to Offer Free Tuition to Students From Families With Less Than $200k

IncomeHarvard announced Monday that undergraduate tuition will be free for students from families bringing in $200,000 or less starting next fall.

For families making less than $100,000, Harvard will cover housing, health insurance and travel costs between campus and home for students.

The cost of undergraduate tuition at Harvard was more than $56,000 this year; the total cost of attendance was almost $83,000, according to the institution’s financial aid website.

“Putting Harvard within financial reach for more individuals widens the array of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives that all of our students encounter, fostering their intellectual and personal growth,” Harvard University President Alan M. Garber said in a statement. “By bringing people of outstanding promise together to learn with and from one another, we truly realize the tremendous potential of the University.”

Garber says that about 86% of U.S. families would qualify for Harvard financial aid.Previously, students were qualified to receive free schooling with all expenses paid if their families made less than $85,000 annually.
