Brave first responders and local lifeguards ran toward extreme danger to save lives during a the Bondi Beach terror attack. Among those on the front lines were volunteer members of the Jewish emergency service, Hatzalah, who responded to crisis calls even as their own friends and family members became targets of the terrorists.
In footage shared exclusively with Belaaz, Hatzalah members are seen responding to the call, showing the intensity of volunteers arriving at a scene that first responders described not just “like” a war zone, but as actual war. While the terrorists were still active, Hatzalah medics were forced to provide life-saving treatment under direct fire.
One member already on scene was injured by gunfire, and the responding units told him what to do to stop the bleeding.
From his hospital bed speaking with 9NEWS, Hatzalah volunteer Rabbi Yankee Supir expressed disbelief that he survived the encounter. He was on duty as a medic when he was shot in the chest and back by the terrorist. Doctors noted that his body remains peppered with bullet fragments, but a miraculous detail emerged: his radio speaker-mic absorbed what would have otherwise been a “kill shot.”
Rabbi Mendy Litzman, a veteran first responder with 27 years of experience, was among those rushing to the scene. In a heartbreaking moment, Litzman discovered his close friend, Chabad shliach Rabbi Elie Schlanger Hy’d lying on the ground after being shot. Bystanders desperately pleaded for R. Litzman to save the Rabbi. Despite his efforts, he found no pulse and had to make the agonizing decision to move on to the next victim. Litzman continued to triage the “makeshift emergency ward,” distributing tourniquets and ventilating patients with bag valves to stop the bleeding.
The crisis was not limited to the shore. Just 100 meters away, lifeguard Rory Davey spotted two men struggling in the water while the sound of gunfire continued.
“I just see two men just going underwater… I just had to grab a board and go out while the shots are still going on,” Davey recalled.
Witnesses noted that on one of the community’s darkest days, no victim was left to suffer alone, as volunteers and locals alike did their absolute best to provide comfort and care amidst the chaos.
