A devastating four-alarm blaze tore through the historic Congregation Beth El synagogue, which also houses the Meadowlands Chabad, on Montross Avenue in Rutherford, New Jersey, around 3 a.m. on Friday. Firefighters from surrounding towns battled intense flames and a collapsing structure. Sadly the facility was completely destroyed.
Rabbi Yitzchok Lerman and his family of six, who resided in the Shul’s quarters, Baruch Hashem managed to escape the fast-moving blaze unharmed. The Shul, a cornerstone of the Rutherford community, was previously targeted in a January 2012 firebombing incident involving Molotov cocktails, which caused minor damage at the time.
The cause of this fire remains under investigation, with no further details available yet. Authorities are working to determine whether the blaze was accidental or intentional.
