In a surprise visit on Tisha B’Av fast, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Mike Johnson, accompanied by a delegation of members of Congress, visited the Kosel to pray and show solidarity with Israel.

The delegation was greeted by Harav Shmuel Rabinowitz, Rav of the Kosel and mekomos hakedoshim, and Mordechai (Suli) Eliav, CEO of the Western Wall Heritage Foundation. Eliav expressed gratitude for the delegation’s “steadfast stand with Israel and their commitment to the fight against anti-Semitism around the world.”

During the visit, the US delegation received a historical and religious overview of the Kosel’s significance to the Jewish people and the importance of Tisha B’Av. They also toured the “Sha’ar Hashmayim” exhibit in the Kosel Tunnels, which chronicles the history of the Jewish people.

In his remarks, Speaker Johnson reflected on the solemnity of the occasion. “We’re here with a delegation of members of the House. We’re so grateful to be in Israel, particularly on this day, recognizing the destruction of the two temples and two types of history. But it is such a moving time for us to be here, to be here at the Wailing Wall.”

The Speaker described his experience at the Kosel. “We’ve offered our prayers. We put our notes into the wall as is traditional and we’re so moved by the hospitality of the people and the great love of Israel.”

He concluded with a prayer for the enduring relationship between the two nations. “Our prayer is that America will always stand with Israel and that we will we pray for the preservation and the peace of Jerusalem. That’s what Scripture tells us to do. It’s a matter of faith for us and a commitment that we have. God bless you.”

At the conclusion of their visit, delegation members placed personal notes in the wall’s stones. Speaker Johnson also signed the guest book, writing: “May G-d continue to bless and protect the people of Israel – and its great friend and ally, America!”
