US Ambassador To Israel Mike Huckabee
US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee rejected reports over the weekend of a US recognition of a Palestinian state to be announced during an upcoming Gulf state summit hosted by Saudi Arabia.
The summit will be held in mid-May during President Donald Trump’s visit: his first to the kingdom in his second term. The trip echoes a similar summit held in 2017.
Ahead of the summit in Riyadh, Trump teased a “very important announcement,” which a Gulf diplomat told The Media Line, was a reference to a Palestinian state.“President Donald Trump will issue a declaration regarding the State of Palestine and American recognition of it… without the presence of Hamas.” The source suggested this move could shift regional power and expand the Abraham Accords.
Former Gulf diplomat Ahmed Al-Ibrahim cast doubt on a Palestinian focus, citing the absence of key regional leaders. He predicted major deals like those signed in 2017, with Trump also set to visit the UAE and Qatar—both major investors in the US.
Saudi analyst Ahmed Boushouki suggested Trump’s comments about buying stocks hint at major economic announcements. He also confirmed longstanding Saudi plans for peaceful nuclear energy, with construction on the kingdom’s first reactor underway. The UAE already operates the region’s only nuclear power plant.
While some economic deals are expected, many have already been revealed. The source noted Gulf nations may be exempted from tariffs.
The Media Line story was picked up by the Jerusalem Post, which elicited a strong response from Huckabee.
“Hmm. Jerusalem Post needs better sources than this unidentified “source.” My 4 yr old grandson Teddy is more reliable. And take it from Teddy. This report is nonsense. Israel have a better friend than [President Trump],” he wrote.
