As Operation “Merkavot Gideon” expands in Gaza, the Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, conducted a field tour and security assessment today (Sunday) in northern Gaza together with the Commander of the Southern Command, Maj. Gen. Yaniv Asor.

In a rare public statement from the battlefield, the Chief of Staff declared: “We launched Operation ‘Merkavot Gideon’ this past weekend. We will press on until the enemy’s ability to fight is broken—until we decisively defeat Hamas wherever we operate. We cannot return to October 7th. Two central objectives guide our every move: the return of the hostages and the defeat of Hamas.”

Addressing the possibility of a temporary ceasefire to enable a hostage deal, the Chief of Staff stated clearly: “The IDF will provide the political echelon with the operational flexibility needed to advance any hostage agreement. A hostage deal is not a pause—it is an achievement. This is what we are striving for.”

His comments come amid increasing pressure from families of the hostages and political voices urging readiness for compromise, even at the cost of a temporary halt in combat.
