The IDF stated it took “many measures” to avoid civilian casualties during a Sunday strike that killed senior Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif, who Israel says was an active Hamas terrorist, along with five other “journalists.”
According to Al Jazeera, those killed included its correspondents Sharif and Mohammed Qraiqea, as well as cameramen Ibrahim Zaher, Moamen Aliwa, and Mohammed Noufal. Freelance journalist Mohammad al-Khaldi was also present and killed in the same attack.
Responding to The Times of Israel’s question about why Sharif was targeted while in a tent with five other journalists near Gaza City’s Shifa Hospital, the military said:
“On Sunday, the IDF struck a terrorist from the Hamas terror organization in the northern Gaza Strip. Prior to the strike, many measures were taken to reduce the risk of harming civilians, including the use of precise munitions, aerial surveillance, and additional intelligence information.”
The statement added: “Terror organizations in the Strip systematically violate international law, cruelly exploiting civilian institutions and the population as human shields for terror activities.”
A military source told The Times of Israel that in addition to Sharif, the strike targeted several other “incriminated terrorists,” meaning confirmed members of terror groups.
