Military says Palestinian Authority officers exceeded their jurisdiction after establishing a roadblock in Area C and detaining an armed Israeli reservist

The Israeli military said Wednesday that it had detained three Palestinian Authority police officers accused of unlawfully establishing a roadblock in Area C of Judea and Samaria, where they allegedly detained and assaulted an Israeli reservist who was off duty.

The incident occurred on August 23, when the Israeli man, a resident of a Judea and Samaria settlement who was carrying a weapon, was stopped by Palestinian Authority officers on a road near the Palestinian town of Beitunia. The officers allegedly assaulted him during the encounter.

“They broke my glasses and phone and took the car key. They also took my weapon, forced me out of the car, and beat me,” the reservist told the Ynet news site after the incident.

According to the reservist, the Palestinian officers placed him in their patrol vehicle and drove in the direction of Ramallah. During the journey, they permitted him to speak by phone with an Israeli Civil Administration officer. He was subsequently transferred to Israeli forces.

The military said the roadblock had been established in Area C, a portion of Judea and Samaria that is designated under full Israeli civil and security control.

The Israel Defense Forces said the Palestinian Authority officers had “overstepped their authority to operate in these areas,” while Israeli security officials “described the incident as a serious overreach by the [PA] security forces, endangering the life of the Israeli civilian and using aggressive and severe force against him.”

The IDF said the three Palestinian officers were detained this week because of their alleged involvement in both the roadblock and the assault. The officers were being questioned by the Shin Bet, according to the military.

“The IDF maintains security coordination in accordance with the directive of the political leadership. At the same time, the IDF will not tolerate any deviation from procedures,” the military added.

The arrests come amid a broader escalation of violence in Judea and Samaria in recent months. Much of the violence has involved attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians, while Palestinian attackers have also carried out several assaults against Israelis, including a stabbing on Monday.
