The IDF said Friday that it thwarted an attempt to smuggle weapons from Egypt into Israel using a drone earlier in the day.

Soldiers monitoring surveillance cameras spotted the drone as it crossed the border, and troops from the Paran Regional Brigade quickly downed the device.

According to the IDF, the drone was carrying three assault rifles, which were transferred to police for further investigation.

Over the past year, smugglers have repeatedly tried to transport weapons and drugs across the Egyptian border using drones, prompting heightened security measures in the region.

On Thursday, Defense Minister Yisrael Katz announced he was “declaring war” on drone smuggling operations along the Egyptian border. He ordered the IDF to designate the area as a closed military zone and directed the Shin Bet to classify such smuggling attempts as acts of terrorism.

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir said the military would dedicate increased resources to combating the growing drone threat.
