The IDF carried out a rare ground operation overnight Friday in Lebanon’s Beqaa Valley searching for clues about the 1986 disappearance of Israeli Air Force navigator Ron Arad.

Israeli troops reportedly searched a cemetery suspected of being linked to Arad’s fate, exchanging fire with Hezbollah terrorists during the operation.

Lebanon’s health ministry claimed at least 16 people were killed and 35 wounded during the clashes tied to the search.

Arad was captured by the Amal militia after ejecting from his aircraft over Lebanon in 1986, and Israel has not known his fate since losing track of him in 1988.
