Israeli airstrikes on Monday hit high-profile targets in Tehran, including Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) sites, the notorious Evin Prison, and the regime’s “Destruction of Israel” clock, signaling a dramatic expansion of Israel’s campaign against the Iranian regime’s core institutions.
The Israel Defense Forces said that Israeli fighter jets struck several IRGC and internal security installations in the capital. “These forces are composed of various corps and commands and are responsible, on behalf of the Iranian regime’s military, for homeland defense, suppressing threats, and maintaining regime stability,” the military said.
Over 50 Israeli Air Force jets carried out what the IDF described as a major wave of “extensive” strikes, targeting missile production centers, radar systems, storage facilities, and regime military headquarters in the Tehran area.
The Basij headquarters in Tehran was among the primary targets. The IDF said the site is “one of the bases of power of the IRGC” and involved in enforcing Islamic codes and turning in civilians who violate them. Other sites included the Alborz Corps, responsible for securing cities in Tehran Province, and intelligence divisions of Iran’s internal security forces.
“These headquarters are significant both militarily and in terms of governance, and striking them harms the military capabilities of the Iranian regime,” the IDF said.
Another key target was the IRGC’s Thar-Allah Headquarters, which defends Tehran against security threats, as well as the Sayyid al-Shuhada Corps, involved in quelling protests and domestic unrest. The headquarters of the regime’s internal information security unit, tasked with monitoring and controlling internal communication, was also hit.
According to the IDF, more than 100 munitions were dropped during the two-hour strike window. The military believes that numerous IRGC personnel were killed in the bombardment.
Evin Prison Struck in Apparent Bid to Free Inmates
Defense Minister Yisrael Katz confirmed that one of the airstrikes struck the gate of Evin Prison, Iran’s infamous detention center for political prisoners, foreign nationals, and activists. Iranian state TV broadcast grainy surveillance footage showing part of the strike.
The prison, known internationally for systematic torture and abuse, sustained damage in the attack. Though there were no confirmed injuries among detainees, Iranian officials said portions of the facility were affected. The strike appeared aimed at enabling inmates to escape.
Hundreds arrested in anti-regime protests in recent years are housed at Evin, along with Western nationals often held as diplomatic hostages. “We have no news, we don’t know if they are still alive, we’re panicking,” said Noemie Kohler, whose sister Cecile is detained there. She condemned the strike as “irresponsible” and warned of possible chaos and riots.
Israel Destroys ‘Destruction of Israel’ Clock, Hits Fordo Access Roads
Katz also announced that Israeli forces struck the regime’s symbolic “Destruction of Israel” clock in Palestine Square, which was counting down to 2040, the year Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei predicted Israel would cease to exist.
Separately, the IDF confirmed it targeted roads leading to the underground Fordo nuclear facility. The goal, it said, was to hinder Iran’s access to the site after U.S. forces bombed it over the weekend, likely to prevent reconstruction efforts or the movement of nuclear materials.
Israel Warns of Escalation as Missile Attacks Persist
Monday’s strikes followed a barrage of Iranian missiles on Israel earlier in the day, which triggered sirens across the country but caused no injuries. Katz warned that further Israeli strikes will continue: “For every rocket fired at the Israeli home front, the Iranian dictator will be severely punished… until all war objectives are achieved.”
Israel’s campaign against Iran began on June 13, and the U.S. joined in over the weekend by bombing three key nuclear sites. Since then, Iran has launched daily missile attacks that have killed 24 people and injured thousands, with several missiles hitting civilian areas.
Trump Hints at Regime Change
U.S. President Donald Trump added fuel to that speculation, posting on Truth Social: “It’s not politically correct to use the term, ‘Regime Change,’ but if the current Iranian Regime is unable to MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN, why wouldn’t there be a Regime change??? MIGA!!!”
