On the 613th day of the war in Gaza, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has, for the first time, openly denounced Hamas’s October 7 attack, while again demanding the terror group release all remaining hostages. His announcement comes as debate between Western countries about recognizing a Palestinian state has heated up.
In a letter sent to French President Emmanuel Macron and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Abbas declared: *“What Hamas did on October 7th in killing and taking civilians hostage is unacceptable and condemnable and Hamas has to immediately release all hostages and captives.” The two leaders are set to co-chair a United Nations summit later this month that aims to revive efforts toward a Palestinian state.
Abbas appears to be positioning the Palestinian Authority to take over governance in Gaza should Hamas be ousted. To bolster international backing for this plan, he has been increasingly vocal in denouncing Hamas’ actions and policies.
In addition, Abbas, who has denied the Holocaust, has recently introduced several refoems, including the rollback of the PA’s policy of supporting terrorists’ families, known as “pay for slay.”
