In Reversal From February, Trump Says Vance is “Favored” for 2028 Ticket

In his clearest indication yet about the future of the Republican party, the president on Tuesday identified Vice President JD Vance as the leading contender to become the GOP’s next standard-bearer in 2028.
Responding to questions from reporters after confirming he likely will not seek a third term, the president gave a powerful endorsement of his deputy. When asked if he agreed with Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s recent assessment that Vance would be a great nominee and is the “heir apparent,” the president was direct.
“Well, I think most likely, in all fairness, he’s the vice president,” he began. “Certainly he’s doing a great job, and he would be probably favored at this point.”
The statement marks a reversal of previous remarks made in February, in which Trump rejected the idea of Vance being his successor.
The comments came after Rubio stated over the weekend that he believed Vance would be a strong choice for the party’s future. The president appeared to endorse a potential alliance between the two, noting, “I think Marco is also somebody that maybe would get together with JD in some form.”
While the nod to Vance was unmistakable, the president left the door open for other potential candidates, cautioning that it was premature to finalize any decisions.
“I also think we have incredible people, some of the people on the stage right here,” he added, gesturing toward other officials. “So it’s too early, obviously to talk about it.”
