US President Donald Trump warned Thursday that continued killings in Gaza by Hamas could provoke a military response. “If Hamas continues to kill people in Gaza, which was not the deal, we will have no choice but to go in and kill them,” he said.

The statement on Truth Social followed a 48-hour shift in Trump’s position after reports that Hamas summarily executed dozens of Palestinians from rival gangs and others it accused of collaborating with Israel.

Earlier, Trump had said he had given Hamas “approval for a period of time” to carry out the killings, claiming the group was targeting some “very bad gangs.” By the next day, however, the U.S. commander in the Middle East publicly urged Hamas to immediately stop attacks on “innocent Palestinian civilians.”

Hours later, Trump told CNN he was conducting “more research on it… It could be gangs plus.”

Although he used “we” when discussing potential retaliation, Trump has previously clarified that he meant Israel would carry out any response and that U.S. forces would not be deployed to Gaza.
