Iran has officially voided a cooperation agreement it signed with the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in September, according to state media reports quoting the Secretary of the country’s Supreme National Security Council.
The announcement follows comments made three weeks earlier by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who warned that Tehran would terminate the arrangement if Western nations reinstated UN sanctions. Those sanctions were reimposed last month.
The move marks a significant blow to the IAEA’s efforts to restore monitoring access and rebuild trust with Iran. The agency had been attempting to reestablish oversight since Israel and the United States bombed Iranian nuclear facilities in June.
“The agreement has been cancelled,”Ali Larijani, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran said during a meeting with his Iraqi counterpart in Tehran, according to state media.
“Of course, if the agency has a proposal, we will review it in the secretariat,” he added.
