Tehran has turned down the offer for direct talks regarding its nuclear program, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated Sunday, the state-controlled Islamic Republic News Agency reported Sunday.

President Donald Trump revealed Wednesday that he had sent a letter proposing direct negotiations with Iran.

Despite this rejection, Pezeshkian noted that discussions through indirect channels remain an option.

“In this response, although direct negotiations between the two parties are rejected, it has been stated that the path for indirect negotiations is open,” he said.

During a cabinet meeting, Pezeshkian confirmed that Iran’s response to Trump’s letter was relayed through Oman.

Trump previously stated that he had reached out to Iran, urging negotiations over its nuclear weapons program. Pezeshkian reiterated that Iran has never been opposed to diplomatic discussions but placed the blame on the U.S. for failing to uphold past agreements, including Trump’s withdrawal from the previous nuclear deal in 2018.

The letter, according to Pezeshkian, emphasized that “it was the breach of commitments that caused problems on this path, which must be addressed to restore trust.”

“It will be the actions of the Americans that determine whether negotiations continue,”he added.
