Iran formally responded in writing to a letter from President Donald Trump that proposed new nuclear negotiations while warning of dire, possibly military consequences if an agreement is not reached within two months, the terror-sponsoring Islamic country’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced Thursday.
Trump sent his letter three weeks ago.
Iran’s response was delivered through the Gulf Sultanate of Oman, which subsequently informed the U.S., a source familiar with the matter told Axios. The Omanis provided the U.S. with an overview of Iran’s message and are expected to deliver the full letter to the White House in the coming days, the source added.
Details of Iran’s response were not disclosed, and the White House has not yet commented on the matter.
During a news conference, Araghchi reaffirmed that Iran remains unwilling to engage in direct negotiations with the Trump administration as long as the “maximum pressure” sanctions campaign continues. However, he indicated Iran’s willingness to participate in indirect talks.
While Trump and his senior advisers have signaled openness to negotiations, they have also maintained the possibility of military action.
Recently, the U.S. military deployed several B-2 stealth bombers to the Diego Garcia base in the Indian Ocean. A U.S. official stated that the move was “not disconnected” from Trump’s two-month deadline.
The B-2 bombers are capable of carrying powerful bunker-busting bombs, which would play a critical role in any potential military strike against Iran’s underground nuclear facilities.
A spokesperson for U.S. Strategic Command confirmed the deployment to Axios, stating that Stratcom “routinely conducts global operations in coordination with other combatant commands, services, and participating U.S. government agencies to deter, detect, and, if necessary, defeat strategic attacks against the United States and its allies.”
