Israel’s Foreign Ministry rejected a call from two dozen counties to end the war in Gaza Monday.
A statement from the ministry criticized the joint international statement, saying it “fails to focus the pressure on Hamas” and should not have been issued during such a delicate phase in the ongoing hostage negotiations. “At these sensitive moments in the ongoing negotiations, it is better to avoid statements of this kind,” the ministry concludes.
The communique was endorsed by the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, France, and Italy. In contrast, several key European partners—namely Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovakia—chose not to add their names to the document.
Despite Germany’s decision not to sign, its Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul spoke by phone today with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar. During the conversation, Wadephul voiced his “greatest concern about the catastrophic humanitarian situation, especially in light of the expansion of the Israeli offensive in Gaza.”
