The IDF says it eliminated Hezbollah’s military commander Haytham Ali Tabatabai in an airstrike in Beirut on Friday, releasing video of the strike soon after.

According to the IDF, Tabatabai was a “veteran and central operative in the terror organization,” having joined Hezbollah in the 1980s and rising through a series of senior posts, including commander of the Radwan Force and leader of the group’s operations in Syria.

The military adds that during the current war, Tabatabai was tapped to lead Hezbollah’s operations division, where he was tasked with “consolidating the organization’s situational picture and force buildup.”

The strikes mark an escalation in the region not seen since last year’s ceasefire between Israel and the terror group, which has been rearming at a rapid rate in recent weeks.

Hezbollah terrorists responded, with official Mahmud Qomati telling reporters that “The targeting was clearly aimed at a key… figure in the resistance, and the results are unknown,” adding that the attack “crosses a new red line.”

Officials speaking to the Saudi al-Hadath outlet said the operation succeeded and that Tabatabai was eliminated, though the IDF has not yet issued a definitive confirmation.

Tabatabai, born in Beirut in 1968 to a south Lebanese mother and an Iranian father, grew up in southern Lebanon and joined the terrorists at a young age.

He has been wanted by the United States since 2016, which set a $5 million reward for information leading to him.

Tabatabai once led Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force, the unit tasked with invading Israel. According to the US Department of State, he also oversaw Hezbollah’s special forces activities in Syria and Yemen.

In 2015, Israel sought to kill Tabatabai in southern Syria in a strike that instead killed Jihad Mughniyeh, the son of Imad Mughniyeh, the senior Hezbollah commander assassinated in Damascus in 2008.

He rose further within the terror group’s hierarchy in late 2024, after the IDF took out much of Hezbollah’s senior leadership.
