Negotiations between Israel and Syria over a security agreement have reached a deadlock, according to a report Monday evening from Kan.

The impasse centers on Syria’s demand for a complete Israeli withdrawal from a security zone captured by the IDF following the fall of Bashar Assad’s regime.

According to the report, Israel has refused the demand, viewing the region as an essential security buffer. The Israeli government is reportedly conditioning any withdrawal from the territory on the signing of a “full peace agreement.”
Syria’s new government, led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, is said to be having difficulty accepting this condition at this stage.

The stalemate follows recent high-level diplomatic efforts. About a week ago, President al-Sharaa met with U.S. President Donald Trump. In an interview with American media following the meeting, al-Sharaa stated that a security agreement with Israel would only be possible in exchange for a complete Israeli withdrawal.

Talks between the two nations have been ongoing for some time, but this dispute over territory versus a full peace accord has halted progress.
