Israel is actively considering a range of responses to French President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement that France will formally recognize a Palestinian state this coming September. Among the proposals under discussion are extending Israeli sovereignty over parts of Yehudah and Shomron, recalling the Israeli ambassador to France, or closing the French consulate in Jerusalem, which serves Palestinian residents.

According to a report by Ynet, these options are being reviewed in high-level consultations. One senior Israeli official commented, “We will distance Macron from any future involvement in the diplomatic process,” signaling a clear intent to limit France’s role moving forward.

Israeli officials are debating whether to respond immediately or wait until France’s recognition becomes official. Some argue a preemptive response could deter other countries from following France’s lead. Macron has delayed the move until September, reportedly hoping that other Western countries, including the UK, Canada, Australia, Belgium, Malta, and New Zealand, will join the initiative by then.

Israeli leaders are looking to craft a firm and strategic response that will make other nations think twice before recognizing a Palestinian state unilaterally. Coordination with the United States is considered key, as Washington’s influence may help dissuade additional governments from aligning with Macron’s decision.

Meanwhile, other global leaders have expressed hesitation. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is reportedly in no rush to follow France’s lead. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said in an interview that while she supports the idea of a Palestinian state, recognition should only come after such a state is formally established. “If you recognize something that does not yet exist, it could create the impression that the problem has been solved — when in reality it is not,” she stated. Italy’s foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, added that Rome believes recognition must be mutual, with Palestinians also formally recognizing Israel.
