Following President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Israel is joining the decision, Israeli Foreign Minister Gidon Saar announced today.
“Israel welcomes President Trump’s decision not to participate in the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC). Israel joins the United States and will not participate in the Council,” Minister Saar said.
In his statement, he criticized the UN representatives, “The UN Human Rights Council has traditionally protected human rights violators by allowing them to hide from scrutiny, and instead has focused on demonizing the only democracy in the Middle East – Israel.”
The Foreign Minister accused the UN of antisemitism, “This body has focused on attacking a democratic country and propagating antisemitism, instead of promoting human rights,” he said. He also mentioned that, in the UNHRC, Israel is the only country with an agenda item dedicated solely to it. Israel has faced over 100 condemnatory resolutions, more than 20% of all resolutions ever passed in the Council – more than against Iran, Cuba, North Korea, and Venezuela combined. “Israel will no longer accept this discrimination,” Saar concluded.
