As the Knesset struggles to reach an agreement on legislation to regulate the status of Yeshivah Students in Israel, the Israeli military, under the directive of the Attorney General, is escalating its actions against yeshiva students who refuse to enlist.

The IDF announced today that, alongside issuing 54,000 draft notices to nearly all yeshiva students, it will begin enforcing compliance among those who received notices but failed to report for service, as required by law. Until now, enforcement has primarily occurred at airports, where draft evaders were flagged via passport checks upon entry or exit from the country.

Under the new plan, military police will set up checkpoints outside Chateidi cities and on routes to destinations like Eilat and the Dead Sea, conducting random inspections of yeshiva students to identify draft evaders. Those found non-compliant will be arrested and transferred to military prison, pending a military court ruling.

This crackdown follows failed attempts in the Knesset to finalize a non threatening draft law. Chareidi parties have threatened to withdraw from the coalition if no draft law is passed or if yeshiva students are arrested.
