Minister Amichai Chikli

Israeli Minister Amichai Shikli, responsible for combating anti-Semitism, was scheduled to fly to Brussels this week to participate in a parliamentary session in honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day. However, security officials instructed him to cancel the flight.

The request comes in response to a specific threat to Minister Shikli’s life. According to a statement from the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office, “In light of concrete warnings and based on the guidance of security officials, Minister of Diaspora Affairs Amichai Shikli was required to cancel his trip to the European Parliament in Brussels.”

Minister Shikli also issued a statement, expressing his disappointment: “I was saddened to receive an instruction this evening from security officials to cancel my participation in the International Holocaust Remembrance Day events at the European Parliament. It is unfortunate that Brussels, the heart of Europe, has become an unsafe place for Jews and Israelis.”

Since the start of the war, and particularly following decisions from the International Criminal Court in The Hague, several government ministers with military service are facing restrictions on international travel due to fears of being arrested or targeted.

Sources told Euronews the warnings came from Israel’s security services and not from the Belgian authorities, but further details have been shared about the nature of the threat.
