Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has called once again for the activist flotilla attempting to deliver symbolic humanitarian aid directly to Gaza to “stop now.”
In an official statement, Meloni cautioned that a confrontation with Israel could destabilize the current “fragile balance” essential for the peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump.
“Many would be happy to disrupt” that plan, Meloni added.
“I fear that the flotilla’s attempt to breach the Israeli naval blockade could provide a pretext for this. Also for this reason, I believe the Flotilla should stop now,” she said.
According to the flotilla, Italy has notified it that the naval frigate shadowing the ships will soon issue a radio message, giving participants the chance to abandon the voyage and return to shore before entering a “critical zone.”
Previously, the Italian defense ministry indicated that its navy would cease following the international flotilla once it reached within 150 nautical miles (278 km) of Gaza’s coast.
Despite this, the Global Sumud Flotilla has repeatedly stated it will continue its journey.
The flotilla includes over 40 civilian vessels carrying parliamentarians, lawyers, and activists, among them Swedish climate activist and antisemite Greta Thunberg, all aiming to break Israel’s naval blockade, which has been in place since 2007 to prevent arms shipments to Hamas.
