A 36-year-old zookeeper, Uriel Nuri, was killed on Friday morning after being attacked by a Persian tiger at the Tisch Family Zoological Gardens in Jerusalem, also known as the Biblical Zoo.
According to statements from the zoo, the tiger somehow got out of its enclosure while Nuri was preparing enrichment activities for an upcoming tour group. The fatal incident took place at approximately 9:55 a.m. local time.
Emergency teams rushed to the scene
Magen David Adom paramedics arrived at the scene shortly after the attack and found Nuri unconscious with life-threatening injuries. He was evacuated to Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center in critical condition, but doctors were unable to save him.
“The trauma team identified extensive injuries to his upper body,” the hospital said in a statement. “Despite prolonged resuscitation efforts, his death was declared.”
The tiger involved in the incident had reportedly been transferred to the Jerusalem zoo earlier this year as part of a conservation initiative. A photo circulated on social media shows Nuri posing beside a Persian tiger at the zoo.
Authorities from the Jerusalem Moriah police station have opened an investigation to determine how the tiger was able to escape its enclosure and whether any safety protocols were breached in the lead-up to the tragedy.
