Jack Schlossberg, grandson of President John F. Kennedy, announced Sunday that he is forming an exploratory committee to consider a run for a congressional seat in New York City.
At 32, Schlossberg’s potential entry is expected to intensify the already competitive race for New York’s 12th Congressional District, following Rep. Jerry Nadler’s decision not to seek an 18th term, Axios reported.
The move comes shortly after Schlossberg shared a poll on Instagram asking followers if he should enter the race. An overwhelming 91% encouraged him to do so.
Schlossberg’s father is Jewish.
The Kennedy heir has drawn public attention both as a political commentator and for his appearance at the Democratic National Convention, where he frequently criticized his uncle, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
However, Schlossberg has also stirred controversy with unusual social media posts, including a crude comment comparing Vice President JD Vance’s wife to his late grandmother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
Earlier this year, the Harvard and Yale Law graduate unleashed a profanity-laced attack on Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), bluntly telling the X CEO to “east s—t.”
In recent months, Schlossberg has aligned himself with top Democrats in New York. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) tapped him last month to serve on the America 250 Commission, which is planning the nation’s 250th birthday celebrations next year.
Nadler, however, has been openly critical of Schlossberg, dismissing his qualifications and calling him a “nepo baby” with no significant achievements.
“Well, there’s nothing particularly good or bad about a Kennedy holding my seat. But the Kennedy, unlike Schlossberg, should be somebody with a record of public service, a record of public accomplishment, and he doesn’t have one,” Nadler told CNN’s Kate Bolduan last week.
“And so, I don’t think he’s going to be a candidate in the end, and he certainly is not going to be a major candidate. There will be major candidates.”
If he proceeds, Schlossberg would face Assemblyman Micah Lasher, who is expected to receive Nadler’s endorsement, as well as 26-year-old nonprofit leader Liam Elkind, who has criticized Nadler for lacking the vigor to challenge President Trump and lead a younger generation of Democrats.
