Former Vice President Kamala Harris officially announced Wednesday that she will not run for governor of California, putting an end to ongoing speculation about her political future following her 2024 presidential loss to Donald Trump.

“In recent months, I have given serious thought to asking the people of California for the privilege to serve as their Governor,” Harris said in a prepared statement. “I love this state, its people, and its promise. It is my home. But after deep reflection, I’ve decided that I will not run for Governor in this election.”

Harris clarified that she is stepping away from elected office for now, but not from public life.
“For now, my leadership — and public service — will not be in elected office,” she continued. “I adding that she would shift her activities towards campaigning on behalf of other Democrats.

Harris made no mention of another presidential bid in 2028, although some have speculated that her refusal to run for governor is to give her time to prepare for a presidential bid, likely against Vice President JD Vance.

Harris was involved in California politics for over 10 years, first as attorney general and later as a U.S. senator, before stepping down to become vice president after Joe Biden’s 2020 victory. In 2024, she took over as the Democratic presidential nominee after Biden exited the race.

NBC, citing a source close to Harris who spoke with her Wednesday, said she is looking forward to engaging with Californians and Americans as a private citizen.

“Stay tuned because she’s going to have other announcements and they’re not about 2028,” the person said.

“She still wants to be part of the national conversation and talk about Donald Trump and being in debates and forums in California is not going to allow her to do that,” the person added.
