Defense Minister Yisrael Katz and IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir met Thursday in Tel Aviv, alongside other senior military and defense officials, to finalize plans for the cabinet-approved takeover of Gaza City. The meeting comes just days after a public dispute between the two over high-level IDF appointments, which Katz said were made without prior consultation.
According to Katz’s office, the defense minister was briefed on the operational framework for the Gaza City campaign. Katz declared, “The State of Israel is determined to defeat Hamas in Gaza, release all the hostages, and bring the war to an end. The IDF is mobilizing all forces and preparing with great strength to implement the cabinet’s decision. We will act as one fist until the mission is completed.”
Speaking separately at a ceremony marking the change of command at the IDF’s Military Colleges, Zamir stressed that battlefield success relies not only on military might but also on close coordination between political and military leadership. “At any time, but especially during wartime, the connection between the political echelon and the military echelon is a central axis for national security,” he said. “Mutual trust and full cooperation are the key to success. Victory on the battlefield depends not only on military strength, but also on inter-echelon cohesion.”
Zamir, who had earlier expressed reservations about the Gaza City plan before giving it the green light, said the ongoing IDF offensive “will lead to the collapse of Hamas’s military and governing capabilities,” and that the campaign will conclude when Israel can “ensure our security and our future.”
At the same ceremony, Maj. Gen. Dan Noyman replaced Maj. Gen. Nimrod Aloni as head of the Military Colleges. Aloni, who also commands the Depth Corps, will hand that role over to Maj. Gen. Dan Goldfus at a later date before retiring from the IDF after 37 years of service.
