A powerful story of integrity and kiddush Hashem unfolded in Bnei Brak on Thursday when an avreich from Slabodka Kollel returned 150,000 shekels in cash to the woman who had sold him an apartment.
The apartment, located in Hod Hasharon, had previously belonged to the woman’s late brother, who had used it while he was ill. During renovations, the student discovered a substantial amount of money concealed within one of the walls.
This discovery raised a halachic question: Did the money belong to the deceased brother, whose will made no mention of it, or to the new owner of the apartment?
The issue was brought before Harav Yehuda Silman shlita, who ruled that the money should be returned to the previous owner, who had been unaware of its existence. On Thursday, a special ceremony at the Rav’s home commemorated the return of the cash, attended by the student’s friends and family.
The woman, who is not religious, was deeply touched and said, “Why don’t they report such good things in the media?”
Rav Silman blessed the student, expressing his hope that, in merit of his righteous deed, he be granted abundant blessings, along with children who follow the path of Torah and mitzvos.
