Federal prosecutors unsealed a sweeping grand jury indictment charging members of a far-left, “anti-capitalist, anti-government” extremist cell with plotting to detonate weapons of mass destruction in and around Los Angeles. One of its members called themselves a “Hamas fan girl” and a “terrorist” who wanted to “burn it all down.”
Authorities said the alleged plan aimed to “completely pulverize” technology companies and logistics firms, according to an announcement made Tuesday.
A federal grand jury charged four members of the radical Turtle Island Liberation Front with terrorism-related offenses, including conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction, providing material support to terrorists, and possession of unregistered firearms.
“Turtle Island” is a name based on Native American history used by radical leftists to refer to the United States and Canada, to connote a rejection of their right to exist.
Zachary Aaron Page, 32, and Audrey Illeene Carroll, 30, who uses the nickname “Black Moon,” were each charged with one count of conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction, federal officials said.
All four defendants – Page, Carroll, Dante James Anthony-Gaffield, 24, and Tina Lai, 41 – are being held without bond. Page was denied a request last week to be transferred to a women’s prison. A fifth suspect, Micah James Legnon, a 29-year-old transgender Marine veteran, was also arrested in Louisiana in connection with the alleged plot.
Prosecutors described the Turtle Island Liberation Front as an anti-capitalist, anti-government extremist group. According to court filings, the defendants belonged to what Carroll referred to as a “radical” faction of the organization that coordinated through an encrypted messaging channel called “Order of the Black Lotus.”
Investigators allege the group spent early December acquiring bomb-making supplies to assemble and test explosive devices in the Mojave Desert. Materials included potassium nitrate, sulfur, charcoal, and metal pipes, prosecutors said.
Following bombings planned for New Year’s Eve, the group allegedly intended to target Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and vehicles using firearms and pipe bombs.
On Dec. 12, the defendants allegedly traveled together to the Mojave Desert carrying bomb-making materials and bottles intended for Molotov cocktails. During the drive, Carroll allegedly told Lai, “What we’re doing will be considered a terrorist act.”
According to the indictment, a confidential source alerted the FBI to Carroll and “four comrades’” plans to test explosives in the desert. Federal authorities said an undercover agent infiltrated the group, and the FBI’s hostage rescue team ultimately arrested the suspects.
Prosecutors detailed a series of communications in which defendants allegedly acknowledged they were committing acts of terrorism and boasted about the destruction they hoped to cause.
Carroll allegedly wrote an eight-page handwritten manifesto titled “Operation Midnight Sun” to avoid creating a digital trail. She told co-conspirators, “What we’re about to do, that’s gonna, uh, be like a Luigi level situation,” a reference to Luigi Mangione, who is on trial for executing a healthcare executive.
Other messages cited in court filings include Page writing, “death to israel death to the usa death to colonizers death to settler-coloniasm.”
Carroll responded in the same chat, “Death to them all, burn it all down,” accompanied by three burning heart emojis. In additional messages, she wrote, “I identify as a terrorist” and “I am a Hamas fangirl.”
In another exchange, Page allegedly outlined plans to ambush ICE agents, writing, “we shoot first, we ask questions later. That’s the policy.” Prosecutors said the broader objective was to “take some of them out and scare the rest of them.”
