Likud lawmakers have voted to remove MK Yuli Edelstein from his position as chairman of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, choosing MK Boaz Bismuth, a close ally of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu as his replacement.
The move sparked immediate backlash from opposition leaders. “This is a dark day for the State of Israel and the people of Israel,” said Opposition Leader Yair Lapid. “Bismuth was elected to promote evasion and this is spitting in the face of the fighters, the reservists and their families.” He accused Likud of becoming “a branch of the Charedim and the draft dodgers.”
The vote was decisive: only four MKs supported keeping Edelstein in the role, while 29 backed Bismuth, who already sits on the committee and will now lead the sensitive legislative process concerning the Charedi draft.
Edelstein was ousted due to his refusal to move forward with a compromise bill on Charedi enlistment that had been negotiated with and promised to the Charedi parties last month. His inaction on the matter led to mounting frustration within the coalition, culminating in the resignation of several Charedi MKs who demanded swift progress. This pressure ultimately triggered his removal.
The leadership transition still requires formal approval from both the Knesset House Committee and the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.
