Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro has hired prominent Washington criminal defense attorney Barry Pollack as his lead counsel in the federal narco-terrorism case pending in the Southern District of New York.

Pollack, best known for serving as the longtime lawyer for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, negotiated the 2024 plea deal with the U.S. Justice Department that resulted in Assange’s release after more than 15 years of litigation under the Espionage Act.

According to a newly filed court notice, Pollack entered his appearance on this morning, Monday, ahead of a scheduled noon hearing in the case.

Maduro’s wife and co-defendant, Cilia Flores, will be represented by veteran Houston federal prosecutor Mark Donnelly, who also filed an initial appearance in the matter.
