A multi-agency manhunt is underway for an alleged anti-Israel activist accused of torching nearly a dozen NYPD vehicles in Brooklyn earlier this month, causing an estimated $800,000 in damages. Authorities are now offering a $30,000 reward for information leading to the capture of 21-year-old Jakhi Lodgson-McCray.
Lodgson-McCray, who police say is a known protest participant with a history of arrests at anti-Israel demonstrations, has been missing since the June 12 firebombing in a Bushwick police parking lot.
“We believe, based on his social media, that he’s very active in the protest community, involving the Free Palestine movement,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said following the incident near the Patrol Borough Brooklyn North headquarters.
A coalition of law enforcement agencies, including NYPD Crime Stoppers, the U.S. Marshals, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), have combined resources to offer the substantial reward for information leading to Lodgson-McCray’s arrest and conviction.
Investigators say they have video of the suspect acting alone for approximately 40 minutes before the incident. “He’s wearing a hoodie cinched up so you can’t see his face, and wearing a mask,” Kenny told reporters. “But we do believe that he acted alone, and obviously he targeted this location because it is a police facility.”
According to police, surveillance video captured Lodgson-McCray’s escape route back to Manhattan, during which he changed his clothes several times.
This is not Lodgson-McCray’s first encounter with law enforcement. According to records, he has been previously arrested at several anti-Israel demonstrations and an anti-ICE protest last month for resisting arrest. He is also wanted for allegedly destroying a statue at Columbia University in September, causing over $1,000 in damages.
Police are urging anyone with information on Lodgson-McCray’s whereabouts to contact NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
