A gunman at Brown University, in Providence opened fire on campus, Police said, prompting an active shooter response and urgent shelter-in-place warnings for students and residents as authorities searched for a suspect.

There are early reports of at least two people killed and 20 injured, eight of which are in critical condition.

The situation remained fluid into the early evening, with Brown University correcting an earlier statement that a suspect had been taken into custody. Police now say that no arrests have been made and that the search is ongoing.

In an emergency alert, the university warned community members to stay hidden and avoid the area around the Barus & Holley Engineering building while law enforcement responded. Multiple police agencies and emergency medical personnel were deployed to the scene.

Providence Police urged the public to shelter in place or avoid the area entirely, citing an active and developing investigation. Officials did not immediately release details on the condition of the victims or the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Rhode Island’s governor said the state was closely monitoring the situation, with state police and emergency management officials assisting local authorities, and urged the public to follow official guidance and stay away from the area.

President Donald Trump said he had been briefed on the shooting, noting that the FBI was on scene. He offered prayers for the victims and their families.

Brown University issued a campus-wide alert warning of immediate danger near the engineering complex, stating:
“BrownUAlert: 1st, Urgent: There’s an active shooter near Barus & Holley Engineering. Lock doors, silence phones and stay hidden until further notice. Remember: RUN, if you are in the affected location, evacuate safely if you can; HIDE, if evacuation is not possible, take cover; FIGHT, as a last resort, take action to protect yourself. Stay tuned for further safety information.”

City officials said they were still gathering information as the response continued. Kristy DosReis, the city’s chief public information officer, said more details would be released as they become available.

The shooting occurred during a busy time on campus, as Saturday marked the second day of final exams for the fall semester. Brown University is a private Ivy League institution with approximately 7,300 undergraduate students and just over 3,000 graduate students.

Authorities continued to ask anyone near the campus to remain sheltered and to monitor official alerts as the investigation unfolded.
