A large Mexican navy tall ship visiting New York City struck the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday night, causing a collapse of one of its massive masts and leaving three crew members critically injured and 17 wounded, according to FDNY.
The bridge was not damaged.
The accident sparked an urgent search and rescue effort as emergency crews worked to recover people from the water. The collision occurred just before 9 p.m. when one of the Cuauhtémoc’s 147-foot-tall masts hit the bridge’s roadway, sources told The New York Post.
Footage from the incident captures the towering mast smashing into the bridge deck before crashing down to the ship below, falling several stories.
The Cuauhtémoc, which was built in Spain in 1982 and carries a crew of 277, had docked in New York as part of a promotion for next year’s Sail4th event, commemorating the United States’ 250th anniversary.
