Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg has officially endorsed Andrew Cuomo in the race for mayor, offering a high-profile boost to the former governor’s campaign.
In a statement released Tuesday, Bloomberg, a billionaire philanthropist and three-term mayor, cited Cuomo’s extensive experience in government and his record of overseeing major infrastructure projects as key reasons for his support.
“I care deeply about the future of our city, and since leaving office, it has been difficult to watch its struggles, especially since the pandemic,” Bloomberg said. “In sizing up the field in the race for mayor, there is one candidate whose management experience and government know-how stand above the others: Andrew Cuomo.”
Cuomo, who resigned as governor in 2021 amid allegations of misconduct, which he has denied, is leading in recent polls. His closest contender for the Democratic nomination is Democratic Socialist and virulently anti-Israel Zohran Mandani, who trails Cuomo by single digits. No other candidate in the race came close to the two in any recent polls.
