Millions of people took to the streets Saturday in “No Kings” demonstrations opposing President Donald Trump, with events reported in more than 2,500 cities across all 50 U.S. states and several European capitals.
In Washington, D.C., organizers said roughly 200,000 people gathered near the National Mall. New York City police estimated over 100,000 demonstrators marched across all five boroughs, with no protest-related arrests. Tens of thousands were reported in Boston, and large crowds also gathered in Chicago, San Diego, and San Francisco.
Democratic leaders joined several rallies. Sen. Bernie Sanders told the Washington, D.C., crowd they had gathered “because they love America,” rejecting House Speaker Mike Johnson’s description of the protests as “hate America” rallies. Sanders added, “There are more people out on the streets in more communities all over our country than we have ever seen in American history.”
Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut said in D.C. that “we are not on the verge of an authoritarian takeover. We are in the middle of an authoritarian takeover. But Trump has not won. Our democracy is in peril, but it can be saved — but no one’s riding to our rescue.” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer marched in New York City, posting on X, “We have no dictators in America. And we won’t allow Trump to keep eroding our democracy.”
Protests also spread internationally, with gatherings outside U.S. embassies in London, Madrid, Berlin, Stockholm, and Rome. Demonstrators held signs reading “Make America sane again” and “Stop making war on your own people.”
In several U.S. cities, signs associated with Antifa were visible. The organization has been recently designated a domestic terror group by the U.S.
Trump’s campaign responded on social media with memes. The official Trump War Room account posted images including one showing Trump wearing a gold crown and another depicting his crowned face as a rising sun over a field of people mid-scream.
Across California, demonstrations were held in San Diego, San Francisco, and other cities. Democratic Sen. Adam Schiff said, “There is nothing more American than standing up… we have no kings in America.” California Gov. Gavin Newsom urged protesters to “stay safe and demonstrate peacefully.”
In Las Vegas, police temporarily closed part of Las Vegas Boulevard to ensure safety. In Boston, Sen. Elizabeth Warren told the crowd, “Donald Trump is not a king. Donald Trump is a bully,” calling the protests “deeply American” and an expression of “patriotism.”
The demonstrations were largely peaceful, and authorities reported minimal incidents throughout the day.
