Minnesota Governor Tim Walz announced on Monday morning that he will not seek reelection for a third term in the 2026 gubernatorial race, reversing his earlier September announcement that he would run.
In a statement posted on X and released by his office, Walz wrote: “Minnesota has to come first – always. Today, I’m proud of the work we’ve done to make Minnesota the best place to live and raise kids. I’ve decided to step out of the race and let others worry about the election while I focus on the work.”
The decision comes amid national and local criticism—led by President Trump—of his administration’s handling of a major welfare, Medicaid, and childcare fraud scandal.
The controversy, which has involved allegations of billions in misused funds with many cases linked to schemes by Somali immigrants, exploded further after a viral video by conservative content creator Nick Shirley claimed widespread fraud at Somali-run daycare centers.
Walz cited the need to focus undivided attention on addressing the fraud without campaign distractions, describing the past year as extraordinarily difficult for the state and emphasizing that he has “zero sadness and zero regret” about stepping aside.
He has defended his administration’s efforts to combat the fraud while criticizing political opponents for exploiting the issue to attack Minnesota’s communities.
The announcement follows reports from political insider Blois Olson, who cited sources indicating Walz would drop out, including a Sunday meeting with Senator Amy Klobuchar to discuss the move. Internal Democratic pressure had mounted for clarity on his plans.
With Walz out, Senator Amy Klobuchar is seriously considering a run for governor and receiving outreach, while Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon has also been mentioned as a potential contender. Several Republicans, including former federal prosecutor Chris Madel and others, have already entered or signaled interest in the race.
