A plane crash at an airport in Iredell County left multiple people dead on Thursday, according to the local sheriff’s office.
The aircraft, identified as a Cessna C550, went down at Statesville Regional Airport at approximately 10:15 a.m. on Thursday.
Officials said it was not immediately clear how many people were on board the plane at the time of the crash, or the exact number of fatalities.
An image taken at the airport showed the aircraft engulfed in a large fireball after impact.
Business records indicate the plane is associated with retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, though authorities said it remains unclear whether he was aboard the aircraft when it crashed.
According to the City of Statesville’s website, the airport is owned by the city and serves corporate aviation needs for Fortune 500 companies as well as several NASCAR teams.
Statesville Regional Airport is located near the I-77 and I-40 interchange, roughly a 10-minute drive from downtown Statesville.
