Newly released video captures a dramatic attempt by a bystander to stop one of the terrorists moments before the deadly shooting at a Chanukah event at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia.

Dashcam footage aired by News 7 Australia on Tuesday shows a man wearing a purple top grappling with Sajid Akram beside a vehicle near a footbridge shortly before shots were fired. The video depicts the two struggling on the ground, with the bystander appearing to reach for and briefly gain control of the gun during the confrontation.

As the struggle continues, the man in the purple shirt is seen standing up while holding the weapon and backing away, motioning toward Akram in what appears to be an attempt to keep him from approaching. A woman can be seen standing close by during the incident.

The footage further shows the bystander retreating step by step while facing Akram, seemingly trying to prevent him from reclaiming the firearm.

The man and woman were later identified as Boris and Sofia Gurman Hy’d, a Russian-Jewish couple living in Bondi. They were the first two victims of the attack.

Naveed Akram, 24, and his father, Sajid Akram, 50, opened fire on those gathered for the Chanukah by the Sea event at Bondi at approximately 6:40 p.m. on Sunday, the first night of Chanukah.

The dashcam footage also appears to show what looks like an Islamic State flag stretched across the front windshield of a silver car at the scene.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the following day that the attackers were motivated by Islamic State ideology.

The attack left at least 15 people murdered and wounded more than 40 others.
