A Muslim man who carried out a violent, antisemitic knife attack on a Jewish barber in Yonkers last year has been sentenced to six years in prison – the minimum required for hate crime assaults, officials announced Friday.
According to Westchester County District Attorney Susan Cacace, Ahmed al Jabali received six years in state prison along with three years of post-release supervision. She described the incident as a “vicious, antisemitic assault on a Jewish barber in Yonkers.”
The attack occurred on August 29, 2024, when al Jabali entered the barbershop of Slava Shushakov and asked for a shave. He then grabbed a pair of barber’s shears and attempted to stab Shushakov multiple times, ultimately slashing him in the arm and hand.
During the assault, al Jabali shouted antisemitic slurs, including calling Shushakov a “[expletive] Jew.” In a felony complaint filed at the time, Shushakov, an immigrant from Uzbekistan—said, “He doesn’t like Israel, he doesn’t like the Jews, he wanted revenge for some reason, and he took my scissors and started attacking me.”
Al Jabali pleaded guilty in April 2025 to Assault in the Second Degree as a Hate Crime, which is classified as a class C violent felony.
Judge James McCarty, who issued the sentence, told the defendant in court, “You admitted to and committed a reprehensible act, which hurt another person.”
Al Jabali apologized in court through a translator. However, Shushakov later told News 12 Westchester, “‘Sorry,’ you know… can be just a word.”
In response to the sentencing, the Westchester Jewish Council said, “We hope that the prosecution of this crime sends a strong message that this type of conduct is not tolerated in Westchester.”
District Attorney Cacace added, “The Westchester County District Attorney’s Office will continue to prioritize combating antisemitism and all hate crimes. There will be no tolerance for this type of despicable behavior in our community.”
