National Security Adviser Mike Waltz is expected to leave the Trump administration in the coming days, according to sources familiar with the situation who spoke with CBS, Politico, Fox News and CNN. His departure follows a loss of confidence from President Donald Trump during Waltz’s first 100 days in the role.
Waltz’s position became uncertain earlier this week. Deputy National Security Adviser Alex Wong is also expected to leave, according to another individual with knowledge of the matter.
Mideast Envoy Steve Witkoff, who represents the US in both the Iranian and Gaza fronts, is being considered as a possible replacement for Waltz, one source told Politico. No final decision has been made on who will take over the role.
Despite efforts to hold on to his position, including attending Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting, making an appearance on Fox News, and visiting the West Wing on Thursday, Waltz’s influence had sharply declined.
His troubles reportedly began when he mistakenly added a journalist to a group chat about military operations. Though Trump initially defended him, four sources said Waltz never regained his footing and also lost support among senior staff inside the West Wing.
On Tuesday, Waltz boarded Marine One with the president, but unlike other aides, he did not join the group on Air Force One to Michigan shortly afterward. A White House official said Waltz was never scheduled to travel, but his absence raised eyebrows among colleagues within the administration.
