JERUSALEM – In a historic move, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu submitted a formal request for a presidential pardon to President Isaac Herzog on Sunday afternoon through his attorney, accompanied by a detailed legal memorandum and a personal letter.

The request comes weeks after U.S. President Donald Trump urged Herzog to pardon Netanyahu.

The President’s Office confirmed receipt of the request, describing it as “extraordinary and of significant consequence.”

The document will now be transferred to the Justice Ministry’s Pardons Department for a comprehensive review and the collection of professional opinions.

A statement from the President’s Office said President Herzog will examine the request “with responsibility and utmost seriousness” once all opinions have been received. The submission comes as Netanyahu continues to stand trial on charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust in three separate cases — charges he has consistently denied.
