Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke today (Tuesday) with Russian President Vladimir Putin — for the first time since December 2023 about two years, at Netanyahu’s initiative.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the official reason for the conversation was the 80th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

“The Prime Minister emphasized the Red Army’s decisive contribution to the victory over the Nazis and highlighted the significant role of the many Jewish commanders and soldiers in the war,” the statement said.

In addition, the statement noted that “the Prime Minister and the Russian President discussed regional developments,” with the Iranian issue reportedly at the center of the conversation. This comes as Putin maintains close ties with the Iranian government, which Israel is currently threatening to strike and the U.S. is currently negotiating with.
