Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yisrael Katz issued a sharp rebuke to Haaretz Friday, accusing the leftist outlet of publishing a “blood libel” after it reported that Israeli forces were ordered to fire on Gazans seeking humanitarian aid.**

“These are vicious lies designed to discredit the IDF — the most moral army in the world,” they said in a joint statement.

Despite their denouncement of the report, the IDF confirmed that it had initiated a top-level internal investigation into the incidents described.

“The IDF operates under difficult conditions against a terrorist enemy that embeds itself in the civilian population… and operates an entire industry of lies to undermine the legitimacy of the State of Israel,” the joint statement continued.

“We strongly reject the accusation raised in the article. The IDF did not instruct the forces to deliberately shoot at civilians, including those approaching the distribution centers. To be clear, IDF directives prohibit deliberate attacks on civilians,” the statement said.

The army added, “IDF soldiers receive clear orders to avoid harming innocent civilians, and they act accordingly.”

The IDF has acknowledged that its General Staff Fact-Finding Assessment Mechanism is conducting a formal probe into the incidents raised in the Haaretz report.

While the IDF hasn’t disclosed its own figures for how many Gazans have been shot at aid sites, it has repeatedly stated that warning shots were fired at Palestinians who entered off-limits areas.

The military emphasized that it is working to ensure the safe delivery of aid in Gaza, particularly through the American-run Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).

“The IDF is operating to allow and facilitate the distribution of humanitarian aid by the American Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), and to secure the routes leading to the distribution centers, to allow the aid to reach the civilians rather than Hamas,” it said in a statement.

The IDF added that any proven misconduct would be addressed.

“Any allegation of a deviation from the law or IDF directives will be thoroughly examined, and further action will be taken as necessary,” the statement continued.
