Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has voiced criticism of Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer, a trusted aide, for failing to anticipate the recent shift in the United States’ approach toward Israel and the broader Middle East, Ynet reported.

According to high-ranking government sources, Netanyahu expressed disappointment with Dermer in closed-door discussions, accusing him of misjudging the U.S. administration’s evolving stance, particularly in relation to the war in Gaza. “Dermer didn’t grasp the situation; he was being manipulated,” one official remarked. “He was convinced the U.S. wouldn’t turn against us—but that’s exactly what happened. Even now, he still believes cooperation will continue, despite the evident deterioration.”

Officials say Netanyahu is particularly unsettled by growing hostility within parts of the American political sphere,

Netanyahu reportedly views right-wing media figure Tucker Carlson as a dangerous influence on Trump, warning that voices like his are pushing narratives that Israel could drag the U.S. into unwanted military conflict. This perception is believed to be contributing to growing Republican skepticism toward Israel.

Appointed at the start of the current government as a de facto envoy to Washington, Dermer was long seen as Netanyahu’s trusted emissary. Once even touted as a possible successor to the prime minister, Dermer has recently come under fire for his role in leading hostage negotiations. Amid perceived setbacks, hostage families have demanded his removal.
